We are excited to announce the relaunch of our ‘Caring for Carers’ programme this autumn, funded by the National Lottery. This innovative programme offers free community-based groups specifically designed for carers of people with learning disabilities or autism, providing vital opportunities for connection, peer support, and improved wellbeing.

Supporting carers in the community

Caring for someone with a learning disability or autism can be incredibly rewarding, but it often comes with challenges that feel isolating and overwhelming. Research shows that carers are significantly more likely to experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression than the general population. In fact, according to a survey by Carers UK, 81% of carers have felt lonely or socially isolated as a result of their caring role, and 64% reported that their mental health has worsened because of their responsibilities.

In response to these challenges, Sheffield Mencap’s ‘Caring for Carers’ programme offers a range of groups that bring carers together to share experiences, provide mutual support, and access professional guidance from Mencap’s carers staff.

Caring for Carers: new additions to the programme

The relaunched programme, developed in consultation with carers, includes more groups aimed at nurturing wellbeing.

Massage Mondays: A soothing start to the week with free massages that help carers unwind and take some much-needed time for themselves.

Wellbeing Community: A monthly course featuring activities like yoga and mindfulness designed to improve mental and physical wellbeing. Carers can also enjoy time to socialise with snacks and drinks.

• Social Saturdays at The Treehouse Board Game Café: A relaxed and fun opportunity to connect with other carers in the heart of Sheffield, with plenty of games and laughter.

In addition to these community-based groups, Sheffield Mencap’s on-site Carers Cabin has also been refurbished. The cabin now serves as a welcoming space with a library, games, snacks, and drinks, where carers can drop-in to relax, connect, or seek advice and support from staff.
