Each issue we profile somebody from Sheffield Mencap and Gateway, to find out more about what makes it such a varied and special place. This spring we get to know Jack, a member of our Activity Learning Hub.
How long have you been at Sheffield Mencap and Gateway (SMG) and what do you do here?
I’ve been a member for over a year – since January last year. I come to Activity Learning Hub (ALH) to do drama and media, and I also come to social groups like snooker.
What have you gained through being at SMG?
The main things I’ve got from coming to Sheffield Mencap is confidence and meeting new people. I have made many new friends. I’ve also got up to speed again with learning and working.
What are your goals for the next year at SMG?
I want to be here for a long time because I like it here. I think I’ll keep doing the same groups again next year because I’m happy with how things are.
Can you tell us your favourite story or memory from SMG?
My best memories from the past year all involve the new friends I’ve made. I’ve really enjoyed being around them and having a laugh together. I like having people around me making jokes, it makes me feel like I’m part of it all.
What are your hobbies and interests when you’re not at SMG?
Outside of Mencap I’m really into video games, I have been for a long time. I’ve been playing Minecraft for 11 years – it’s my favourite. I also like racing games and all other types of games. In Minecraft, I play creative, survival and adventure mode. I like them all for different reasons, but survival is my favourite as there is a lot more in it and it’s more challenging.
I like sports, especially football. I’ve been a Liverpool supporter for 10 years. I like watching football on TV and supporting my team whenever they play. Jurgen Klopp leaving has shocked me and the world! I was very very surprised he made the decision. He’ll be sadly missed by everybody who supports Liverpool.
Finally, tell us a fact about yourself that people at SMG don’t know…
I was very clumsy when I was younger and was always breaking things – luckily I haven’t broken anything at Mencap yet!
