The first Sheffield Mencap and Gateway ‘Family Fun Day’ was held this August, bringing our members and their families together.
The sunny weather provided the perfect backdrop for a day of outdoor activities, and the grounds of Norfolk Lodge were filled with families enjoying food, music, games and more.
Community connections
The event was organised by Sheffield Mencap and Gateway’s Community Connectors, along with other members and staff.
Community Connectors are members of our services employed to ensure the voices of people with learning disabilities and autism are central to our service development and support. Community Connectors are dedicated to making Sheffield a more inclusive place and regularly host social groups and activities.

Something for everyone
The Summer Fun Day featured a range of exciting activities for all ages, including various stalls, games, and a bouncy castle that kept the kids entertained. One of the highlights was a lively performance by the band ‘All Sorts,’ a talented group of musicians, all of whom have a learning disability. Their music had the crowd on their feet dancing and singing along.
A member of Sheffield Mencap who dreams of opening his own pizza restaurant ran a pop-up pizza stall, selling handmade pizzas.

The day was made even more special thanks to generous donations from local organisations, including Play Valley, Chatsworth, Cannon Hall, and Magna, who contributed prizes to be won by attendees.

The Summer Fun Day wasn’t just about fun—it was also a reflection of the Community Connectors’ commitment to creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities and autism to come together, build connections, and encourage positive change in the community.
